L.A.’s hot new marketplace, Eataly, isn’t just a restaurant or market — it’s a three-story temple to all edible and drinkable things Italian.

Chef, entrepreneur and Emmy winner (ABC’s “The Chew) Mario Batali, along with partners Nicola Farinetti, and brothers Alex and Adam Saper, opened the L.A. outpost of the international chain in Century City on Friday with a pasta ribbon cutting ceremony that featured L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti.

The emporium and various food counters vend all things related to Italian cuisine—from Italian-produced small batch olive oil to wine, craft beer, spirits and twists of fresh-made mozzarella. It is the fifth U.S. outlet for the chain, which now has 39 marketplaces for upscale Italian food, produce, bakery, desserts and more.

Century City’s Eataly has several California-only attributes: a glass-walled, high tech cooking school and demonstration kitchen overlooking Santa Monica Boulevard and outdoor seating for more than 150. For the first time, California wines are on the menu too plus local produce, charcuterie and Pacific Ocean-sourced fish and shellfish (overseen by Providence’s Michael Cimarusti who also runs Eataly L.A.’s Il Pesce Cucina restaurant). “This is a brand new custom build,” explained Batali of the $36 million, multi-story endeavor, which “feels like California,” says the chef.

The team began searching for a Los Angeles location almost seven years ago; Eataly L.A. took three years to plan and build. Still to come: a rooftop floor with indoor/outdoor restaurant and event space scheduled to open in the next two months right in time for award season. In addition to his restaurant empire and Eataly duties, Batali is shooting a new season of “Molto Mario” for the Food Network, his original cooking and conversation series.

Eataly L.A. marketplace is open 9 a.m.- 11 p.m.; coffee service and Lavazza Café begins at 8 a.m.; restaurant and the nine take-away counter opening times vary. Catering services are available.

  1. Mario hang in there you are an amazing chef we all make mistakes large and small but we come through it with a stronger sense of what is good and what is not so good. You will come through this a much stronger person. I’m in your corner. Nothing against the chew bug I feel they were wrong and I don’t think it will survive the 3 left are just not capable of keeping up as before.
